The worms arrived today. They are going to live in a smart 'executive'womery. I think that just means it's posh green rather than black plastic. It's certainly different from from my last, and rather unsuccessful, wormery, where you threw everything in together and let them get on with it.
I had to soak thecoir block to create some comfy bedding, line the tray with damp newspaper, put a brick in the sump, so the worms can wriggle back if they fall in. I added garden compost to the coir to introduce soil microbes to the mix. Worms may I introduce you to the nematode family etc ... The leaflet says you should leave them or 2 weeks to acclimatise, but elsewhere it says you can start feeding them tiny little bits straight away.
The good things about worms is that they eat almost anything organic, so cooked food waste can go straight to them. I've also bought a bokashi bin, where I'll put any meat or stinky food items. This ferments down, and the results can then be fed to the worms or put on the garden compost heap.
Apparently the worms might try to escape. I'm leaving the lid off, as they don't like light, and I think I'll leave the outside lights on tonight to dissuade them from any nocturnal wanderings. I've also stood the bin in a plastic bag, in case they head underneath.
More people should dispose of their waste this way, and more local groups should try to set up community projects. when mne is underway, I might try to get something going with my neighbours.
